What data we collect and why

Newsletter subscription

When you subscribe to our weekly newsletter, we collect your email address. We use it solely to send you the newsletter.

  • Legal basis: Your consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)).
  • Double opt-in: We send a confirmation email before activating your subscription. You are not subscribed until you confirm.
  • Processor: Brevo (Sendinblue SAS, France) handles email delivery on our behalf.
  • Retention: We keep your email until you unsubscribe. After you unsubscribe, we retain your consent record for 3 years for legal compliance, then delete it.
  • Unsubscribe: Click the unsubscribe link in any newsletter, or email us at contact@onthecontinent.eu.

Website analytics

We use Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool that we self-host on our own server in Germany.

  • No cookies are set.
  • No personal data is collected.
  • No cross-site tracking.
  • Purpose: Understand aggregate page views (which pages are popular, how many visitors per day).
  • Legal basis: Legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)). We have a minimal, non-intrusive setup that does not affect your rights.
  • All analytics data stays on our server in Germany.

Server logs

Our web server automatically logs standard request data: IP address, user agent, timestamp, and requested URL.

  • Purpose: Security, error detection, and abuse prevention.
  • Legal basis: Legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).
  • Retention: 14 days, then automatically deleted.

Fonts

All fonts are self-hosted from our own server. We do not use Google Fonts or any other third-party font service. No data is shared with third parties when you load our pages.

Admin authentication

If you are an admin user, we set a session cookie called otc_admin_session to keep you logged in.

  • Purpose: Secure admin access.
  • Attributes: HttpOnly, Secure, SameSite: Strict.
  • Expiry: 7 days.
  • This cookie is strictly necessary for admin functionality. No consent is required.

Who we share data with

  • Brevo (Sendinblue SAS, France, EU) — newsletter email delivery.
  • Hetzner Online GmbH (Germany, EU) — web hosting and server infrastructure.

No data is transferred outside the European Economic Area.

Your rights

Under the GDPR (Articles 15–21), you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate data.
  • Delete your data ("right to be forgotten").
  • Restrict how we process your data.
  • Data portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
  • Object to processing based on legitimate interest.
  • Withdraw consent at any time (for the newsletter).
  • Lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

No automated decision-making

We do not use profiling or automated decision-making that produces legal effects or similarly significant effects on you.

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
